Growing up in Belhaven, Tarra Collins remembers as a teenager heading to the big city of Little Washington on weekends. Collins, now a paralegal living in Greensboro, says she always made a beeline to Bill’s Hot Dog Stand.

“The dogs are pink and fried in oil and served ‘all the way’ — with their signature spicy white chili, mustard, and chopped white onions on good ol’ white Merita buns,” Collins says. “The dogs are assembled quickly by women who have worked there probably my whole life, so every bite is the best bite due to the expertise in the assembly.”

They’re so good, in fact, one person once came back to town and ordered 500 to take back to friends. “I usually order about four,” Collins admits, “and you really can’t eat less than two. They’re best eaten fast with an ice-cold Dr Pepper.”
