My grandfather and dad Paul and Steve Craven run Little Castle Grill for 25 years. I also still remember the cheeseburgers they were GOOD. You can't find them like that anymore. My grandfather died in 2007 and I cherish my memories of my childhood and the time I spent growing up hanging out uptown, the Little Castle and Sunset Theater!

Hello - I just had an idea for some of the vacant or in need of areas along the Beltline, 40 E & W , and other state maintained roads : Maybe some of the area towns that have garden clubs could take over an existing flower garden along the highway, maintain it, and the state might be able to provide a sign designating there pride and joy of that garden area. Just a thought to help save tax dollars and let garden clubs show what they can do. I live in the Raleigh area and know of a once beautiful Day Lily spot on 40 near Rock Quarry Rd .... it looked so very nice when it was in full bloom. Now I don't know what has happened to it. Thanks, Brian

Duke's mayonnaise makes everything good. The few years I lived out of state I had to import Duke's mayonnaise along with Cheerwine, Neese's liver pudding and Stamey's barbecue.
Sometimes we'd eat fish out in Asheboro on Friday nights or my mom would pick it up take out on the way home. It was Saturday if we were having fish at home. When my daddy's parents came up to Greensboro from their home in Four Oaks, it usually meant a trip to the local fish market. Back in the day they could buy a lot of flounder for $4.00 and feed about 6 people and maybe even have some left. My mama fried fish and made homemade coleslaw and homemade French fries and fried cornbread. I can smell it now and hear the food frying in the black Lodge frying pan.
When my mom's parents, granddaddy and nanny, took us on our annual July vacation to Ocean Drive North Myrtle (in the golden days of that area 1969 - 1982) we'd always make the short drive over to Calabash about 1 or 2 days before the end of our vacation. Thanks for bringing those memories to mind.
Now we have our own little house at Ocracoke (once a fishnet storage shed for fishermen). We enjoy buying fresh fish from the Ocracoke Seafood Company, frying it up, and eating on our screened porch.
Thanks Our State. Hope everyone enjoys some good local NC seafood this summer.

Like Margaret said reading Steve's recipe for cole slaw and talking about eating that good ole Southern fried seafood, makes me hungry. Those were the good ole days and it was like every Friday or Saturday night was seafood night. The Duke's mayonnaise and the sugar is what makes the slaw so good. Thank you Steve for a reflection back to the old days. A trip to Steve's website (listed above) is worth your time to visit. Steve has some awesome recipes with step by step directions.

Made me want to find a seafood house. As a kid, Friday was my favorite day because my momma always fried fish to go with "homemade" slaw (just like Steve's except made with salad dressing), and grape kool-aid. That's "good-eating."
