So glad you didn't mention Cool Whip in this fabulous story. Dressing any decent banana pudding with this despicable mess is akin to putting tofu flowers on an Easter bonnet.

I so miss this place. Although my time in Carrborro and Chapel Hill was short, I'll always remember the BLT's from Neal's deli.

PS-I'm sure we're distant cousins!

So glad to read your story about preservation of heritage, land and dreams. The man I love took me to Pond Mountain yesterday. We were awestruck (hope to be back in less windy weather). It is food for my soul and a relief to see these vast views and know that not everything will be paved and concreted. Just for a moment we felt part of something far beyond ourselves. Inspired! We celebrate that these fine fellows were tenacious and creative enough to find ways to remain good stewards of this fantastic place and stay true to a dream. We salute you and are grateful that you are sharing. We wish you strength and continued good judgement (maybe even a stiff drink, if necessary, to clear the senses) for when it all seems impossible. I cannot wait to bring my children here.

My family has about 400+ acres in southwest Virginia and our home is still on the New at Claytor Lake. I dread the day that we have to make "those" decisions.

Blessings from Marie and the man she loves...

PS: We have not been successful finding further info about Pond Mountain regarding appropriate public access. We were at the parking area and read that camping is permitted. Can you help us find how to learn more?

Also, the photo of the tree on page 108 is remarkable. Is there any way I could buy a digital file to print for my home? I would love to have it for remembrance. Might even give it to that man I love!
