Don’t miss the Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon at Piedmont Distillers in Madison.
My daddy grew up on a farm outside of Madison, and, on visits back to the homestead, he and his brothers would swap stories about how they pestered the bootleggers who cut through the creek bottom on the way to town — a dangerous pastime. Growing up in Rockingham County, I’ve had many opportunities to try homemade shine. It’s always been raw, scalding, and unrefined.
But no longer. Now Joe Michalek, a transplant from the state of New York who operates Piedmont Distillers out of the old Madison train station, is making a perfectly legal spirit, Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon. Triple distilled in an authentic copper still to a smooth 80 proof, this is sipping shine, “the highest-quality moonshine available,” Michalek brags. Having tried it, this native son agrees. Believe it: Carolina white lightning’s reputation has been restored, even if by a Yankee.
