Don’t miss the conch fritters and honor-system beer at Yacht Basin Provision Co. in Southport.
Urbanites are hard to impress, but Provisions, as it’s called by locals, inspires awe, no matter who you are. My wife, two girls, and I once shared a beach cottage with a family from Washington, D.C. As soon as we arrived at Provisions, I ordered a basket of conch fritters, which my friends had never heard of and their kids couldn’t imagine eating — until our order arrived, at which point they were wolfed down.
We sat on the dock, and my big-city oyster-loving friend observed, “This is one of North Carolina’s few authentic seafood places,” and then added, “whatever that means.”
I understood completely: From the chalkboard featuring local steamed shrimp, crab cake sandwiches, and grilled tuna to the laid-back, fish-house, open-air, awning-flapping lack of decor, Provisions, which also has a location in Southport, is for real. And when we went for beers, which you count for yourself using the honor system, my friend was incredulous.
