Marketing Manager

Our State magazine, an 85-year-old award-winning publication, is searching for a dynamic, self-motivated individual to serve as Marketing Manager. As the leader of the marketing team, you will successfully develop and execute media strategies for maximum positive publicity for the Our State brand. You will also manage a communications specialist and an event coordinator. 

Our State is North Carolina’s premier magazine devoted to travel, history, and culture. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement events and public relations campaigns to ensure the high visibility and continued growth of Our State
  • Use both traditional and innovative approaches to public relations and special events
  • Develop and execute strategic public relations efforts to promote both the magazine and events, achieving significant increases in brand awareness and consumer engagement
  • Develop relationships with organizations, businesses, and key media outlets across the state to establish opportunities to promote and showcase the Our State brand
  • Understand, articulate, and advocate the Our State brand to the media, consumers, and community
  • Develop compelling story angles to promote the monthly issue of the magazine
  • Manage the communications specialist to issue monthly press releases, identify appropriate local, regional, and national outlets to pitch stories and events to in order to gain Our State recognition, and oversee coordination of television appearances and interviews
  • Manage the event coordinator to develop special events, including festival appearances, boutique events, sponsorship events, premier events, etc.
  • Oversee the event staff to assist with selection, training, and event preparation
  • Actively contribute to Our State social media outlets
  • Maintain an effective working relationship and open communication with editorial, sales, circulation, store, and production departments

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or marketing
  • Minimum of 5 years in marketing, public relations, and/or community relations or related field, including supervisory experience
  • Must have high energy level, an outgoing personality, and a sense of urgency
  • Must display a passion for North Carolina and Our State
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking
  • Availability to work some weekends and evenings throughout the year
  • Ability to balance demands of multiple tasks and deadlines

Account Supervisor

Position Duties:

Account Associate

Our State magazine is searching for a dynamic, self-motivated individual to serve as Account Associate. The Account Associate will provide support/assistance for the Account Supervisor and the Sales Manager. The Account Associate is responsible for increasing sales, renewals of existing accounts, lead generation and qualification. For a specified time frame, the Account Associate position should serve as the training ground and grooming period for an Account Supervisor position.

Our State magazine seeks a Part-Time Seasonal Retail Assistant for the Our State Store, our online and catalog-based retail division that celebrates North Carolina-made and -inspired goods. We seek an enthusiastic individual with exemplary customer service skills, an interest in retail sales, and e-commerce during our busy holiday season.

In this part-time position, you will:

Customer Service & Store Administration

  • Answer phone calls, emails, and take retail orders from customers
  • Provide exceptional service to all customers by anticipating their needs and practicing empathy, patience, and good listening
  • Take initiative to make decisions based on our customer service standards
  • Input orders and data from various sales sources
  • Assist with sales and accounting reports
  • Provide efficient and professional administrative support to the Store team
  • Assist with handling customer service issues, returns, exchanges, etc.
  • Make changes to orders and communicate with our fulfillment warehouse
  • Input data into warehouse management software system

Merchandise & Inventory

  • Package merchandise and coordinate with our third-party fulfillment partner to ensure inventory is properly managed

Special Events

  • Work at occasional special events where you will assist with set-up and interact face-to-face with customers

Digital Internships

Our State offers digital internships during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Internship positions are for 10-15 hours a week, unpaid, and interns must be eligible for school credit. Interns will work directly with all Our State digital channels including ourstate.com, email newsletters, and the BBQ NC and BEER NC apps. We offer our digital interns opportunities for experience in both editorial and web development. Editorial tasks may include: writing, editing, fact-checking, story pitching, and assisting with editorial planning and social media strategy development. Web development tasks include producing e-newsletters, updating the Our State website using WordPress, creating web pages in WordPress, creating images for social media, and other general duties.

We prefer students who are pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, or interactive design. Experience working for digital properties associated with a student or local publication is a plus. Experience with online publishing, WordPress, and Photoshop is preferred. Candidates must be able to work in our office in Greensboro.

Interns also help with fact-checking, indexing, assembling copy for our website, and other general duties. Our State interns work closely with the editorial team and have the opportunity to produce portfolio-worthy clips.

We prefer students who are pursuing a degree in journalism or English. Experience working on a student or local publication is a huge plus.
