This year will mark the first Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the lives of the Veterans buried at Wilkins Cemetery. A historically segregated cemetery, burials in Wilkins Cemetery date back to the 1800s for both Black Americans and Native Americans. Veterans buried here before 1964 did not receive military honors because of the color of their skin. This year, a color guard with Active-Duty Soldiers from Fort Bragg will bear the colors, and a bugle player will play “Taps.”
