In the 1950s and ’60s, Dr. Gaine Cannon took medical care directly to his patients, many of whom were among the poorest people living in western North Carolina’s remote regions and had never before seen a doctor. Acclaimed North Carolina photographer Bruce Roberts traveled with Cannon, capturing these images as Dr. Cannon served the community of Balsam Grove.
