Made in NC Awards Winston-Salem GetawayThe Original Mast General Store is located in the small community of Valle Crucis, which is North Carolina’s first rural historic district. Opened in 1883, this store is still a gathering place with the Valle Crucis Post Office, a pot-bellied stove, and 5¢ coffee. Visitors and locals can still find most everything they need for life — cast iron cookware, rocking chairs, stoneground grits, jams and jellies, comfortable footwear, traditional fashions, and toys powered by imagination. And who could pass up more than 500 old-fashioned candies like Caramel Bulls Eyes, Pop Rocks, and Atomic Fireballs?

From rural roots to Main Streets, Mast Stores can now be found in three states — North Carolina, with locations in Boone, Waynesville, Hendersonville, Asheville, and WinstonSalem; South Carolina in Greenville and Columbia; and Knoxville, Tennessee. Each building has its own unique story to tell, and they range in age from the 1870s to the 1940s.

Mast Store’s shelves are stocked with familiar brands like Columbia, The North Face, KEEN, Patagonia, and Carhartt, along with local staples including Old Mill of Guilford and No Kidding!! Goats’ Milk Soaps. Whether preparing to spend the day in the kitchen or embarking on a trip around the world, the Mast Store has goods and expertise to provide helpful advice.

Stepping across the threshold is like wandering back in time. From the creaking floorboards and antique fixtures to old-fashioned customer service, a visit to Mast Store is a shopping pleasure.
