Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart USA – Arrive San Jose, Costa Rica
Arrive in San Jose, meet your Professional Naturalist Tour Director, and transfer to your hotel. On the fourth voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1502, the explorer and his crew discovered the Caribbean side of a beautiful territory he called “Costa Rica” or “Rich Coast.” Costa Rica is Central America’s greatest hidden gem, a haven for ecotourism, featuring lush forests, magnificent waterfalls, rumbling volcanoes, and diverse ecosystems. Tonight, enjoy a Wine & Beer Reception prior to your Welcome Dinner with fellow Our State Magazine travelers.

Day 2: San Jose – Poas Volcano National Park
Today, enjoy the scenery of the Central Valley, which is surrounded by soaring mountains, strawberry plantations, and flower farms. Visit a Coffee Plantation to sample fresh Costa Rican coffee and learn about the history and cultivation of the coffee bean. Also enjoy an opportunity to learn about Costa Rican chocolate. Experience the delicious aromas and get insight into the traditional production methods used for generations before sampling for yourself. Later, travel past tropical landscapes for a visit of Poas Volcano National Park to view the dramatic mile-wide crater from an overlook. Also, stop at the Sarchi Artisan Village, known as the cradle of craftsmanship and an ideal place to shop for an oxcart, Costa Rica’s best-known craft and souvenir. You will stay in the Arenal Volcano National Park area (La Fortuna) for the next two evenings.

Day 3: La Fortuna – Day of Leisure
Today, enjoy the amenities of your resort and spa hotel. The resort features a wonderful viewing angle of the Arenal Volcano and is surrounded by lush gardens, walking paths, excellent bird watching, swimming pools, and hot springs. You can also enjoy some local excursions at your own expense, including kayaking on Arenal Lake, exploring the Arenal Hanging Bridges, or ziplining on Sky Trek in Arenal. Later, enjoy dinner at the resort.

Day 4: Arenal Volcano National Park – Monteverde
This morning, visit the Arenal Volcano National Park, one of the 10 most active volcanoes in the world. Its constant emissions of gases and lava will amaze you. Later, check into your hotel in the Monteverde Cloud Forest area for a two-night stay and enjoy dinner.

Day 5: Monteverde
Today, experience the conservation project at Selvatura Park. Enjoy a unique opportunity to walk across Hanging Bridges and discover firsthand the natural beauty of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, one of the largest and most enchanting wildlife sanctuaries in the Americas. Enjoy interesting visits to the Butterfly Garden, home to 50 different species, and the Hummingbird Gallery, home to many species from the cloud forest.

Day 6: Monteverde – Jaco Beach/Puntarenas
This morning, travel west via motor coach to the Jaco Beach/Puntarenas Beach area, located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, for a two-night resort stay. Jaco Beach/Puntarenas area is one of the most visited coastal destinations in Costa Rica and is well known for wildlife viewing, sport fishing, and surfing. Enjoy a visit to the Carara National Park, a tropical bird and wildlife sanctuary and one of the world’s few nesting places for the scarlet macaw.

Day 7: Morning at Leisure – Crocodile Cruise
Enjoy the morning at leisure to relax and enjoy the amenities of the resort complex. Maybe take an optional excursion via Tranopy or Zipline. Later, set out for an exciting Jungle Crocodile Safari Cruise. The 2-hour cruise highlights crocodiles and spectacular bird viewing while cruising the Tarcoles River.

Day 8: Jaco Beach/Puntarenas – San Jose
This morning, enjoy a bit of leisure time before departing for San Jose. En route, visit an Orchid Garden and gain insight into the stunning diversity of orchids. Tonight, enjoy a special, fun-filled Farewell Dinner with Local Entertainment.

Day 9: San Jose – Return to USA
Fly home filled with wonderful memories of Costa Rica.
