Join Our State for a one-of-a-kind experience at Sawtooth School for Visual Art. Create your own handcrafted works of art in just a few hours with beginner-friendly classes held throughout the day. No prior experience is required!
Registered students choose one pathway from the list below. Each pathway includes two thematically connected art classes taught by expert instructors.
- Bread and Butter – Learn to safely use various wood studio tools to create a charcuterie or cutting board from a variety of colorful woods. Craft a ceramic butter dish in Sawtooth’s pottery studio, fired and glazed in your color choice.
- Community Postcards and Prints – Create community postcards on a Vandercook letterpress, one of the few in the state, and then create high-contrast, screen-printed posters inspired by Sister Corita Kent’s collage-style work.
- Silk and Silver – Discover the beautiful colors you can produce as you learn to dye a silk scarf in Sawtooth’s mixed media studio. In their jewelry studio, create wire-wrapped rings using gemstone beads as a focal point.
- Snapshots and Swirls – In the photo studio, learn the emulsion lift process with new Polaroid film, transforming any image into a one-of-a-kind artistic print. Head to the graphics studio to immerse yourself in the traditional craft of marbling and create decorative, patterned paper for stationery, scrapbooking, and more.
- Stones and Shavings – In Sawtooth’s woodturning studio, watch shavings fly as you craft a beautiful wooden pendant. Then, visit the lapidary studio to cut and polish a vibrant gemstone to set into your new custom piece of jewelry.
The day also includes lunch, a roundtable discussion with guest speakers, and a post-class reception where you can meet other students and showcase your handiwork.
Don’t miss this chance to tap into your creative side and take home beautiful, handcrafted works of art. Reserve your spot today for a memorable experience at Sawtooth School!

About Sawtooth School for Visual Art:
Since 1945, Sawtooth has been a creative hub for central North Carolina, serving generations of artists with high-quality, hands-on offerings for students of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. Their name comes from the unique jagged roof of their historic building in downtown Winston-Salem, formerly a Hanes hosiery factory. North-facing, angled skylights were designed to harness the power of sunlight before widespread electricity; now, they fill Sawtooth’s spacious studios with abundant natural light.
