Celebrating the Resilience of Our Mountains
This October, we’re paying tribute to our mountains and the people who call them home with an issue devoted to the enduring spirit of community after Hurricane Helene.
In this issue, we will meet mountain makers who remind us that even in the hardest seasons, North Carolinians rise to meet the moment. We’ll visit choreographer Heather Malloy whose latest production, Appalachian Phoenix, is a soaring story of strength. In Bat Cave, we’ll learn about Jake Jarvis, who volunteered nearly every day after the storm to regrade roads, reroute rivers, and restore lives. In Todd, we’ll see a group of beekeepers who came together to build hive boxes for those who lost everything. In Marshall, we’ll meet potter Josh Copus, whose love for his hometown is as steady as the mountains that surround it. And in Swannanoa, we’ll see a garden of hope blooming after Helene.
This issue is a tribute to the beauty of community in our state — a reminder that no matter how strong the storm, North Carolinians are stronger. We hope you’ll join us for this meaningful tribute to our mountains.
