Dear Our State readers,

Our hearts are with the families and communities in our beloved North Carolina mountains, who have been devastated by this catastrophic hurricane.

These towns, which have always been a source of pride and inspiration for us all, now face a long and difficult path to recovering. Our October issue — traditionally a celebration of the mountains — now serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience that is needed in this challenging time.

We’re especially grateful for the dedication of emergency personnel, first responders, and volunteers who are on the ground, helping in any way they can. We suggest reaching out to these relief and recovery organizations that need our help, including:

Elizabeth Hudson

Hudson is a native of North Carolina who grew up in the small community of Farmer, near Asheboro. She holds a B.A. degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and began her publishing career in 1997 at Our State magazine. She held various editorial titles for 10 years before becoming Editor in Chief in 2009. For her work with the magazine, Hudson is also the 2014 recipient of the Ethel Fortner Writer and Community Award, an award that celebrates contributions to the literary arts of North Carolina.
