“Crab legs!” replied Ava Lewis, then 3 years old, when asked if she wanted chicken nuggets or a cheeseburger for dinner one night. “I told her, ‘You need to get you a job since you’re talking like that,’” her mother, Maggie, recalls. She gave the toddler a choice of selling lemonade or bracelets. Ava opted for her grandmother Louise’s lemonade and set up a booth in front of Maggie’s hair salon in Durham. When business started booming, a reporter asked Ava how she was going to spend her earnings. Unbeknownst to her parents, the tiny entrepreneur said that she wanted to help babies in need. Soon after, she began donating baby supplies to Durham Rescue Mission, as well as to individual families. In a little over a year, Ava has made thousands of dollars and now sells bottles and gallons of her tasty beverage online. “I like to give,” says the five-figure earner. As for crab legs, she buys them every time she goes to Harris Teeter.
