St. Louis pharmacist Edwin Wiley Grove purchases 408 acres in north Asheville. Landscaper Chauncey Beadle, the Biltmore Estate superintendent, designs the neighborhood.


1913

After a year of construction, a 156-room wellness retreat opens. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan declares the Arts and Crafts-style inn to be “built for the ages.”


1930

Former President and current Chief Justice William Howard Taft checks into the resort, hoping to heal his progressive heart disease. Taft is one of 10 U.S. presidents to visit the property.


1942

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the federal government uses the inn as a detention center for Axis diplomats. After the war, it’s used to rehabilitate U.S. Navy sailors.


1956

The Grove Park’s owners agree to allow Supreme Court justices to occupy the inn in the event of an enemy attack. The hotel is selected for its privacy, though the golf course and planned swimming pool allegedly help seal the deal.


1988

Teacher, writer, and historian Bruce Johnson starts what is now the National Arts & Crafts Conference as a small gathering of antiques dealers at Grove Park. Today, the event welcomes thousands each February.


2013

Omni Hotels & Resorts purchases the inn from KSL Resorts after a $25 million renovation begun in 2012.


2022

The inn hosts the 30th National Gingerbread House Competition. The contest welcomes celebrity chef judges and competitors who present magical edible creations.
